Now I need to start picking some GMU's for the various seasons. Lot of research to be done.

Got my Hunter Education card
I'm officially legal to get a hunting license in Colorado. Two pretty long days this weekend, 9-5:30 each day but it was totally worth it. Learned a TON of great stuff from my instructor Mike. I'll be posting some of the details from the class.

Hunter Education Class
Here in CO everyone is required (instate or out-of-state) to take a hunter education class. I was lucky and got an alternate spot for this weekends class in Longmont.
There's a ton of great information here: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/HunterEducation
If you're out-of-state there are several options. Homestudy, Internet-based, or CRASH course. Crash courses are typically what's recommended for non-residents. Some classes are also offered for women and youth.
All classes except the CRASH course cost $10. The CRASH course is $20. Pretty amazing deal.
Looking forward to this weekends class. Will post my notes.

Finally.
I've wanted to hunt for quite awhile. Started to have interest back in Scouts when I was 11 or so. But not knowing anyone who hunted and having a father who was not interested in the sport, I never had the opportunity to learn. After 18 years and moving to Colorado I have finally caught the bug and plan to hit the mountains this coming autumn in hopes of harvesting an Elk.
This blog is where I'll be documenting my progress, posting worthwhile findings and other knowledge on my quest.
If anyone decides to actually follow this other than myself, here's where I'm starting from which will give you a gauge of my experience level. If you're just starting out there might be some worthwhile knowledge in here for you.
I learned to shoot as a kid... shot .22's and got pretty decent with technique. Thankfully, I still remember what I was taught back then. I've got basic survival skills but have a lot to learn. Know almost nothing about hunting and that's where the journey begins.
Harvesting an Elk is not easy. Starting with big game like this is a bit crazy. But why not try? We'll see after my first season out there if my opinion changes.
